Care assessment

At some point your relative or dependent may be in need of local authority care. It may be because the have developed Dementia or Alzheimer's or simply due to the fact that they have become increasingly infirm.

Your relative is legally entitled to have a care assessment in order to properly assess their needs and establish an appropriate care plan.

Sadly, at the point that your relative really needs that care,  you may feel least equipped to argue on their behalf to ensure they get both the care and funding that they are entitled to. It can require real persistence to make this happen.

We are familiar with the process and have successfully helped clients to:

  • Obtain a proper care assessment
  • Appeal against a care assessment
  • Obtain a re-assessment

The question of the type of care needed is separate to the question of who will pay for that care.  The NHS have a Decision Support Tool to help determine the type of care needed.

Sometimes, usually in an emergency situation, your relative may be placed in a Care Home before a proper assessment has taken place. This can have implications not only on the type of care that they receive, but also on whether or not they are required to contribute to the cost of that care.

In our experience Individual local authorities may have a differing approach to care provision and funding.
