Common care issues

We are able to advise clients facing a wide variety of care issues. These are just some of the situations that we have been asked to assist with recently.

  • Elderly patients simply discharged from hospital without a care plan
  • A couple whose son assisted them in the purchase of their council home, only to have the home taken into consideration by the local authority when making a care assessment. Sadly many people strive to buy their home in the hope of achieving a degree of security, yet in some cases they find that this prevents them from qualifying for funding and they are then obliged to sell the property.

  • Care users who have been asked by care homes to give a guarantee that they can afford to privately fund for a three year period before they are admitted.

  • An elderly patient upon admission to hospital being asked:'1. Do you own their own home? 2. Do you have a mortgage? ' Subsequently they were classified as a self-funder without a proper care assessment being undertaken. At the time they were questioned they were in hospital because they felt unwell  and confused and were hoping to receive treatment rather than fill out a questionnaire!
  • The parent who refuses to accept the need for or go into care when that is the most appropriate course of action. Simply having Power of Attorney over an elderly parent or relative, does not mean that things will always go smoothly. It can be difficult to act as an Attorney and we have experience in providing objective advice to help you fulfil your responsibilities in these circumstances.
